Istanbul, May 14 () - Young people in Turkey losing their hope for the future, according to the data released by the Turkstat on Thursday.

Young population at the age group of 15-24 stood at 16.5 percent with 12.78 million individuals at the end of 2014, in Turkey, 51.2 percent of which males and 48.8 percent females.

According to the results of Life Satisfaction Survey, the percentage of young people who were hopeful about their own future fell by 5.9 percentage points to 78.0 percent, down from 83.9 percent in 2013 and 84.0 percent in 2012.

While the percentage of young males who were hopeful about their own future was 79.7 percent in 2014, the percentage was 76.4 percent for young females.

Losing hope made the young people unhappy. While the proportion of young people who felt themselves happy fell by 3.9 percentage points to 61.2 percent in 2014, down from 65.1 percent in 2013.

The proportion of young people who felt themselves happy was 60 percent for young males and 62.4 percent for young females.

According to Turkstat population projections, the population of Turkey was estimated to be 84 million 247 thousand 88 persons in 2023 with the young population in total population to fall to 15.1 percent in 2023, 11.7 percent in 2050 and to 10.1 percent in 2075, respectively.

In 2013/14 academic year, net schooling ratio in higher education increased to 39.9 percent with showing a 1.4 percent increase compared to the previous year.

While a significant change wasn’t observed in young males according to the previous year, this proportion increased to 40.9 percent with 2.3 points increase for young females.

According to the results of Household Labor Force Survey; youth unemployment rate realized as 17.9 percent in 2014. This rate was 16.6 percent for young males and 20.4 percent for young females.

19.4 percent of young people were employed in agriculture, 32.7 percent were employed in industry and 47.9 percent were employed in service sector.

The proportion of internet usage in young people rose to 73 percent in 2014 from 68.7 percent which was the proportion in 2013. This proportion was 82.8 percent for young males and 63.2 percent for young females.

According to the results of Arriving Citizens Survey, the proportion of young people going abroad for educational purposes among the young people going abroad increased to 13.2 percent in 2014 by showing a 0.7 percent increase compared to the 2013.

This proportion was 11.3 percent with 2.9 points increase for young males and 20.5 percent with 8.7 points decrease for young females according to the previous year.

While the proportion of young people going abroad for business purposes (conferences, meetings, assignments etc.) among the young people going abroad was 25.3 percent for young males it was 2.8 for young females in 2014.

The proportion of interest in politics was 12 percent in 2013, it increased to 15.6 percent with 3.6 points for young females in 2014. This proportion decreased to 20.8 percent in 2014 with 2.3 points compared to 2013.

While the proportion of interest in science and technology was 45.2 percent for young people in 2013, this proportion increased to 46.6 percent by increasing in two genders in 2014.

When people who made young people happy were analyzed in 2014, the proportion of young people who mentioned that their families made them happiest increased to 74.5 percent with 1.7 points increase according to the previous year.
